The Safe Way to Have Liposuction
Dr. Hutchins combines the techniques of SmartLipo™ laser lipolysis and tumescent microcannula liposuction for the superior results and safety.
Smartlipo employs the use of a laser to liquefy the fat for more efficient liposuction and skin tightening, further avoiding the skin laxity that often results from traditional liposuction. This new technology is the most popular type of liposuction available today. Smartlipo is a painless and minimally invasive body sculpting technique offering superb results with minimal trauma, great safety, fewer complications, and a fast recovery rate. Patients have essentially no down time, and they typically return to work in one to three post-op days. This quick recovery further reduces the total cost.
The safe way to have liposuction is under “tumescent” local anesthesia with minimal oral sedation. It is important to be fully informed about the surgeon’s technique, his choice of anesthesia, and his attitude toward safety. Pitfalls to be avoided include large-volume liposuction, treating multiple areas in one session, “package deals” combining liposuction with other procedures, and having liposuction under general anesthesia or intravenous (IV) sedation.
The goal in liposuction should be body contouring rather than weight loss. Multiple, diffuse, crisscrossing tunnels made with microcannulae enable the healing process to shrink the skin evenly, thus providing a smooth cosmetic result. Since skin excision is usually unnecessary, this technique provides a scar-free alternative to such skin excision procedures as the “tummy tuck.”
The patient typically naps or chats with the nurses during the procedure and walks out postoperatively as if it had merely been a routine office visit. Going for a walk that very evening is recommended, and patients usually return to work in one to three days.
Areas commonly treated with microcannula tumescent liposuction in women include lateral thighs (saddle bags), hips, abdomen, waist, inner thighs, inner knees, chin, cheeks, and jowls. The popular sites in men are flanks (love handles), breasts, abdomen, and chin.
The term “tumescent” by definition excludes general anesthesia or heavy IV sedation. More than 500,000 liposuction cases have been done with the true tumescent technique, and there have been no reported deaths, hospitalizations, or major complications. So, if you are considering liposuction, you can feel confident that the procedure can be done safely and with excellent cosmetic results by using the true tumescent technique.
SmartLipo Laser Lipolysis in Body Sculpting and Contouring
Dr. Hutchins has over a decade of experience with microcannula liposuction under tumescent local anesthesia in the office operating room. He has now added Smartlipo, the first and only FDA approved (2006) laser lipolysis procedure to his technique.
With Smartlipo, a one- to two-mm cannula (tube) containing a laser fiber is inserted through tiny skin incisions into the fatty layer to liquefy fat deposits for efficient microcannula liposuction, thus giving the best chance for a smooth, sculptured, cosmetic result. The laser light also acts as a visual guide for precise cannula tip movements, thus minimizing damage to surrounding tissue. By sealing blood vessels, the laser minimizes swelling, bleeding, and bruising. Moreover, the laser energy shrinks collagen in the dermis, thus tightening (“shrink-wrapping”) the skin in order to circumvent the loose skin problem that typically follows traditional liposuction and to avoid the scarring that results from excising loose skin as in a facelift or tummy tuck. Furthermore, the Smartlipo laser stimulates new collagen formation in the dermis to reconstruct the skin, thus “turning back the clock.”
