Laser Treatment of Veins (and More)

and Laser Removal of Pigmented Lesions

We treat the following conditions with the Cutera® Xeo Laser:cutera-veinsba
  • Facial & leg veins
  • Rosacea
  • Port Wine Stains
  • Birthmarks
  • Warts, scars

In addition, we can remove pigmented lesions with either the Cutera XEO or Medlite C3 laser:
  • age spots
  • sun spots
  • freckles.

These lasers can remove broken blood vessels ("spider veins"), small leg veins, rosacea (red nose & cheeks), angiomas ("cherry spots"), birthmarks, warts, scars, brown pigmented blemishes, age spots, and freckles.

The lasers are so safe that young children and infants can be treated.  With a means of treatment as safe and effective as these lasers, there is simply no reason to live with unsightly red vascular lesions and brown pigmented blemishes.

Treatment with the lasers will vary from patient to patient, depending on the age, size, and type of lesion, the color of the patient’s skin, and the depth to which the lesion extends beneath the skin’s surface.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do the lasers work, and why is it a safe treatment?

The lasers produce an intense but gentle burst of laser light that passes harmlessly through the skin and is selectively absorbed by the vessel or lesion.  The absorbed light heats up the vein and damages its lining, causing the vein to close without damaging the epidermis.

Laser light penetrates the skin only to a depth of 1.5 millimeters, or about 1/20th of an inch. Because of this, scarring is very rare. This type of laser has been used to treat infants as young as a few days old.

State-of-the-art treatment of spider veins requires a long wavelength and wide pulse in order to bypass the melanin pigment in the skin and selectively target the pigment in the hemoglobin molecule for absorption of the laser light.  Older lasers for treatment of facial and leg veins have the disadvantage of a shorter wavelength, which causes the laser light to be absorbed by the melanin pigment in the skin.  Thus the epidermis becomes the target, causing immediate blistering and permanent hypo-pigmentation.  This does not happen with the new lasers.

Facial veins, vascular birthmarks, and the diffuse redness of rosacea are readily eliminated with the CoolGlide laser.  Leg veins up to 3 millimeters in diameter are likewise obliterated.

The Cutera XEO laser can be used on any skin color, even dark or sun-tanned skin. The XEO LP560 handpiece and the Medlite C3 laser are used for pigmented lesions and age spots.

The XEO is the updated Coolglide – that is, a Coolglide mounted on the XEO platform along with an IPL device with multiple handpieces.

Are there any side effects with laser treatment?

Patients will experience some temporary discoloration or reddening of the skin around the treatment site. Hypo- or hyper-pigmentation response or increase of pigment color may be experienced by some patients. The skin will typically return to normal pigmentation over time.

How long does the treatment take?

Successful treatment of superficial ("broken") blood vessels and rosacea usually takes one or two treatments. Darker blood vessels or more intense redness are more likely to need a second treatment (usually less extensive) eight weeks or more after the first. Each treatment lasts five to ten minutes. Port-wine stain birthmarks may take between four and eight treatments given eight weeks apart, to achieve significant lightening.

Does the procedure hurt?

The patient will experience mild discomfort at the treated site. It is often described as a rubber band snapping against the skin or the slight sting of a mosquito bite. Sometimes topical numbing creams are applied before treatment, and ice is applied during the treatment.
